Lydia causes a stir (Picture: ITV)
Coronation Street newcomer Lydia (Rebecca Ryan) has already caused some ripples in Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) and Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien)’s relationship, but that’s not the full extent of her meddling, as Lydia sets her sights on Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard).
‘I think it’s a genuine and instant attraction,’ Rebecca Ryan reveals. ‘They read a lot of books and poetry, they’re like-minded, they have a lot in common. It’s unfortunate he is related to Adam as that doesn’t help. If anything happens she blames Adam for ruining things. There’s a genuine attraction though.’
Lydia isn’t the only person attracted to Daniel, as Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan) is also on the scene. This makes things awkward between Lydia and Daniel, as Rebecca explains. ‘I think Lydia and Daniel would be good together, they have similar interests. For Lydia it’s an awkward time as he has this thing with Daisy. Take everyone out of the equation they’d have a lovely relationship, but that’s not how it works in the land of Corrie.’
Rebecca likes that her character isn’t afraid to stir things up and cause trouble to get what she wants, but she’s keen to emphasise that Lydia isn’t a bad person and just reacts to events. ‘I’m looking forward to her causing trouble, there’s always going to be a bit of drama,’ she says.
‘But I also want people to see the reasons behind why she’s there to cause trouble. She doesn’t go in there intending it – I want to get that across. She doesn’t want to ruin everyone’s lives, but she does do things. I do want to show her nice side and her friendships with Sarah and Daniel are genuine with real connections. I hope that comes across.’
Whether Daisy still sees Lydia’s nice side after all this trouble remains to be seen.
